Is the number of days that a Volvo AW70 transmission will hold up behind 16psi of force-induced Swedish redblock power.

For those who haven’t been following along(by that I mean all of you because I never post anymore and haven’t said much about this project, like ever), I have a 1989 Volvo 240 Wagon. I bought it from a, very racist, middle-aged lesbian couple in central Florida because it was the only one I could find in the southeast that hadn’t been molested and was legitimately rust-free. Long story short, I threw the pile of dealer receipts and maintenance records in the garbage and strapped one of the biggest turbos it could spool onto it.

I’ll save you all the boring details and get right to the fun part, this thing moves. It is faster than any Volvo(wagon or otherwise) has any right to be. I did things correctly(-ish) and pulled the motor, cleaned it all up, made sure it was in the ballpark on tolerances, and did the only mod available to ‘beef up’ the transmission. If you couldn’t gather from the title, that still didn’t help much. The motor seems rock solid other than the very noticeable piston slap(can’t get away from that with a 200k+ mile Volvo motor) and it’s a real hoot. But apparently the incredibly crappy AW70 just isn’t up to snuff when you throw 16psi of high-compression HP at it.

I knew it wouldn’t last forever, but hell, 3 days is pretty sad. Although it is kinda cool that I found the sweet spot between instant explosion and lasting forever.

According to my Volvo-specialist mechanic, the piston slap is unavoidable. He used to work on 740s and 240s when they were new, and they frequently came in for “weird engine knocking” and such, and it was always piston slap. Sometimes they’d rebuild the motor, and 6 months later - piston slap.

Time for a manual swap? Not a Volvo one though, I think the M46s can only take 250hp or so, but I could be wrong.

Yeah, piston slap just happens. I’m not worried about it. It just makes it sound like it’s broken at idle.

And as far as the trans goes... I wanna stay automatic. The AW71 *MIGHT* hold together for my purposes, I’m planning on trying that first at least with a custom converter in it. Then if I blow that apart I’ll go GM automatic and look for another motor to throw some forged goodies in and make real power.

Are you still in Pensacola? I’ll probably be in the area Thanksgiving week. I’d love to see this thing.
